Tips for Caring for Aging Hair
When we think of aging, we often think of our skin, bones, and muscles. These parts of our body can definitely change a lot over the years, but what about our hair? Few people consider the changes that hair will go through as you age. Hair is actually susceptible to a lot of unique changes over the years.
Many women are surprised at the changes their hair will go through during and after menopause. These changes can be unsettling, and often the reaction is to cut hair short and accept this new phase of life.
There are steps you can take, though, to help preserve your beautiful hair. You need to be intentional just as you are intentional with anti-aging other parts of your body as well.
This quick guide will provide you with some secrets to younger looking hair.
Up the Vitamins
Over time, the hair shaft will shrink, resulting in thinning hair. This can be counteracted, however, by taking biotin. Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin that you can add to your regular vitamin routine. It can help hair grow thicker.
Another tip to help hair look thicker is to have your hairstylists cut your hair in a way that angels your face. This adds dimension and movement, which makes it look more youthful.
Ease Up on Color
If you have been a coloring enthusiast for a while, now may be a good time to slow down. Going to extremes with coloring is not great for aging hair. This is especially true for overbleaching. In addition to taking a toll on your hair health, overbleaching can also cause your face to look aged as well. Going to extremes with super dark colors will also work against you as well.
To preserve your hair’s health and complement your face, go for soft highlights around the face.
Moisturize
You have probably noticed that your skin needs a lot more moisture these days. Well, your hair does too. Simply using a conditioner in the shower may not be enough moisture for your aging locks. You will need to purchase a hair moisturizer specially formulated for older hair.
Eat Better
There are a hundred reasons to eat a healthy diet, but improving the appearance of your hair is another reason you can add to the list. Low protein diets have a huge effect on hair health. You need lots of lean protein to keep your hair looking its best. The added bonus is that lean protein can also help you maintain weight and feel less hungry throughout the day.
Cool Off
If you are addicted to using heat on your hair, now is the time to cool it. Older hair simply cannot withstand the heat of flatirons in the same way that younger hair could. If you occasionally use the flatiron, be sure to use a protective product first.
It is good to go several days in between using the flatiron as well.
